Team China Racing have today confirmed their driver lineup, announcing Nelson Piquet Jr and Ho-Pin Tung as their drivers for the inaugural Formula E season.
China Racing, alongside Andretti Autosport, had been the only team so far to not have finalised their driver selections.
By opting for ex-Formula One ace Piquet, son of three time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet, and Chinese-Dutch single-seater and sportscar star Ho-Pin Tung, the Chinese racing outfit have issued a clear statement of intent to rival Formula E teams.
Piquet, like much of the Formula E grid, has extensive experience in a variety of top-tier motorsport categories including Formula 1, having previously driven for the Renault F1 team alongside two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso. He has also strongly performed in NASCAR, GP2 and the ill-fated A1GP, and currently leads the standings in the Global Rallycross Championship.
The Brazilian made his debut for Team China Racing in last week’s simulated race days, following up with a drive in Tuesday’s final pre-season test.
Piquet said: “I have always enjoyed the challenge of testing myself in a variety of racing formats so I’m delighted to be able to drive in Formula E. To be a driver in the very first FIA Formula E championship is a great honour particularly with Team China Racing who are looking to establish themselves in the sport.”
Ho-Pin Tung, driving Piquet Jr.’s sister car, also comes from an illustrious background. Tung is the first Chinese driver to drive a Formula One car, having tested for Williams-BMW and Renault, and is also the first Chinese driver to pilot an IndyCar. He currently competes in LMP2 and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, and made his debut for the team in Tuesday’s Formula E test.
“I am deeply honoured that Team China Racing invited me to join them for this brand new and challenging FIA Formula E championship”, Tung said. “I am also very happy to return to Team China, with whom I have celebrated some great successes in the past. An extra dimension for me, surely, is the inaugurating race taking place in Beijing. I look forward to giving tens of thousands of my Chinese fans an exciting day.”
